Going Places Disabled

"The Buck Stop"

My name is Sue Buck and this page is for and about the people and places in the often unrecognized world of the disabled.

We want educate and enable people associated with any business open to the public on how to best accomadate the world of disabled people.

Our mission is to challenge every government official, business owner, developer, restaurant owner, managers of stores and shopping malls, etc. to get in a wheelchair, use a walker or cane and navigate through their own establishment. The purpose is not malign or anger anyone, but rather to educate and hopefully get some changes made.

We can all join forces to let the world know that the special needs people, the handicapped. or the disabled are entitled to the same privelages & opportunities as anyone else. It would seem that everyone would agree with that sentiment, but don't realize the hurtles that people with disabilities face.

Has anyone ever gone to a Target store and used one of their own electric carts? I have many times. However - sadly, if I have to use the restroom the cart doesn't fit through the entryway to get IN to the bathroom!! REALLY??!! Target - you have carts that don't fit in the restroom? Come on!! This has happened in more than one Target that I've gone to. I did find one Target that has a "family"restroom and the cart fit in.

Miromar Mall, Estero, FL I use a portable electric wheelchair and have hand controls in my car. So I can go anywhere by myself (well, almost anywhere) One of my huge pet peeves has been shopping at local stores. Miromar Mall, in Estero, has got to be the worst. Even as they add new stores, there isn't one store that has an automatic door. How do they think people using walkers or wheelchairs are going to get in? Most of the stores are so poorly set up I can't even get through the first 10 -15 feet. And even then I'm squeezing through racks or shelves to close together. Also, when am lucky enough to find something too buy, the checkout counter & credit card scanner is over my head! Parking spots are only minimum with no plans to accomodate the huge population of handicapped people in this area. Anyone else?

JC Penny, Gulf Coast Town Center, Estero, FL Nice store - they do have automatic doors. Push the big buttom on the outside to get in. Nice! Can't find the big buttom to get out!! GRRRRR.........Also, shelves in bed/bath section to close together. Have gotten "trapped" many times. Once again I would encourage the store manager to get in a wheelchair and try to shop in your own store.
